Carpet Care:  Overall Cleaning

IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR VACUUMING

Vacuuming your carpet regularly, at least once weekly, is essential for good carpet care.  Vacuuming helps to remove soil and dirt that you drag into your home.  Vacuuming is neccessary to help maintain the life of your carpet between regular deep cleanings.

HOT WATER EXTRACTION OR DEEP CLEANING

Even though vacuuming your carpet regularly can remove most soil, it is also necessary to clean your carpet on a regular basis to remove oily, sticky soil that vacuuming doesn't remove.  Deep cleaning is recommended a minimum of every 12 or 18 months.

Hot water extraction or deep cleaning methods are sometimes also called "steam cleaning".  Carpets are preconditioned to suspend ground-in soil, then a pressurized cleaning solution is injected into the pile.  The suspened soil and solution are immediately extracted.  This method can be performed by a truck-mounted unit outside the home.

PET URINE DAMAGE

The types of damage from pet stains can be diverse and depend on the makeup of the urine.  Urine content varies due to the pet's diet, age, health, sex, reproductive cycles and if the pet is on any medications.  Due to this, some urine stains are not removable.

Pet urine can result in devasting damage to your carpet.  Urine damage over time can affect the dyes used in the carpet.  Some urine spots may be noticed immediately while others may take weeks or months for a reaction.

When urine spots develop slowly, the dyes and carpet fibers may be permanently damaged.  Pet urine left unattended can damage the carpet in many ways.  Moisture can weaken the layers of the carpet which allows separation or delamination of the backing materials.  Seams can also be damaged and separate.

Another very noticeable problem, especially with cats, is odor.  Unless the cat urine can be completely removed, odor removal is unlikely.  A number of products from stores are available to combat odor, however, they may simply mask the odor.  During times of high humidity the odors may reappear.

If the odor cannot be removed, the damaged areas of the carpet may need to be replaced.  Sometimes if carpet replacement is necessary, then replacement of the padding and even subflooring may also be necessary.  Remember however, that this is all dependent on how severe the pet staining is.
